There are a few things you should know before booking your stay at an all-inclusive resort to ensure that it’s a good value.

Budget Breakers
It’s important to be aware that the upfront cost of your hotel room and meals may not be the only expenses you’ll incur. Additional costs can include tips, fees for certain activities or amenities such as specialty lounges, transportation to and from the airport, and charges for premium alcoholic beverages or premium menu items, flights, travel insurance, meals during travel, and off-resort activities.

During my first few all-inclusive resort trips, I was surprised to discover some of these.
To avoid this, I recommend researching and planning for these additional costs ahead of time. Consider one of these:
- Resorts that offer packages for these extras
- Programs that include these costs in the upfront price
- Set aside a portion of your vacation budget for these expenses
This will help you enjoy the all-inclusive resort without financial surprises.
All-Inclusive Stay Cost
The price can be greatly affected by the size and age range of your group. When I traveled with a group of friends, we found that the cost per person was much lower when we shared a room than when we booked individual rooms. Additionally, resorts often offer discounts for children under a certain age, such as 12 or younger. Some resorts may charge more for teenagers or young adults who require separate rooms or additional amenities. Other resorts have a maximum occupancy: the resort you love might force you to book a second room for your 5-person family because the max occupancy is 4.
It’s crucial to check
- Age-based pricing policies
- Effects of multiple rooms with the same party size
- Max occupancy per room
In general, I recommend reaching out to the resort directly or checking their website to get a better idea of the pricing structure for your specific group.
All-Inclusive Package Discounts
Often, all-inclusive resorts will offer special discounts for groups of several people. These deals can be especially beneficial for families with kids who are on a budget.
If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort with a large group, it’s important to plan ahead and book your accommodations early. Having a reservation in advance can help you secure the best rates and avoid the last-minute rush.
Tipping
I’ve learned that it’s best to set aside around $100-150 USD per couple per week for tipping. It’s important to note that some resorts include tips in their all-inclusive package and prohibit additional tipping. Others don’t include tips and only gratuities and encourage tipping.
Even if the resort prohibits tips, you’ll still want to consider tips during airport transfers and excursions.
Consider a separate amount for tipping as you budget to avoid any surprises during your trip.
Weather and Timing

Timing is crucial and affects your budget, especially if you want to avoid the high prices and crowds that come with peak travel times.
During peak travel times, such as holidays, school breaks, and the warm, dry seasons, prices are typically at their highest but this might be the best time for you to travel.
On the other hand, traveling during off-peak times can save you a significant amount of money. Many all-inclusive resorts offer deals and promotions during slower seasons. But it could also mean encountering less favorable weather conditions
By planning your vacation during the right time for you, you can stay on budget and get the most out of your all-inclusive experience.
Resort Location Can Affect Budget
The location of your all-inclusive resort can significantly impact the total cost of your vacation.

Airport Transfer Costs
If you’re planning an all-inclusive resort vacation, the distance between the airport and your resort can impact your airport transfer costs. Resorts closer to the airport usually have lower transfer costs, while those further away can add up quickly. Some all-inclusive resorts offer complimentary airport transfers as part of their package, so it’s worth checking if this is included in your booking.
Off-Resort Costs
A resort with ample amenities and attractive grounds can decrease your need to spend money off-resort.
But, if the surrounding area is safe and has plenty of off-resort attractions and activities, you may be more inclined to explore and spend extra while you’re exploring. You’d want to factor in additional costs for off-property activities. All-inclusive resorts may offer excursion packages that are either included or charged separately. Alternatively, you can consider excursion providers not affiliated with the resort, as they might offer cheaper rates compared to the resort’s offers.
Additionally, if you choose to go off-resort, transportation costs can add up quickly. It’s essential to consider your priorities and budget carefully when selecting an all-inclusive resort location.
Your Budget Starts with You
A key to budgeting for an all-inclusive resort vacation is to think carefully about what you want out of your trip. There are many different types of all-inclusive resorts, each catering to a specific type of traveler:
- if you’re traveling with young children, you might prioritize a resort with a kid’s club or other family-friendly activities
- if you’re looking for a romantic getaway, you might prefer a more secluded and intimate resort

Next, find out how much you can realistically afford to spend.
With these two decisions, you’ll be able to eliminate options as you do your research. By following these tips and being mindful of additional costs, you can plan a relaxing and enjoyable vacation without breaking the bank.
