From a simple camping site in England to the most renowned all-inclusive resort companies, discovering the story of the pioneers who changed the face of tropical vacation destinations and brought the idea of stress-free vacations to life is fascinating.

At first, all-inclusive resorts were often associated with mediocre buffet meals, watered-down drinks, subpar accommodations, and even hidden fees. As time passed, the all-inclusive market evolved to become an upscale vacation choice.

The Pioneer of All-Inclusive Holidays in the UK

Billy Butlin, a successful entertainer from Cape Town, South Africa, established the first camp for holidaymakers in Skegness, England, in 1936. The cost of a stay at Butlin’s included meals, lodging, entertainment, and use of the sports facilities at the camp. The camps he designed included a variety of features that would later become the norm for all-inclusive hotels today, including swimming pools, entertainment bars, restaurants, and eateries.

Butlin developed a method of marketing that could be used by many of the future all-inclusive resorts. The ads for his camp included in the Daily Express, had a massive response, and generated more than one million reservations in the first year. This type of advertising allowed him to give guests a week’s vacation in exchange for a week’s salary and still be able to pay for the staff at the camp.

The Skegness camp was a hit, and Butlin increased the size of the operation by opening additional camps in England.

Billy Butlin’s Legacy

While it was not the first all-inclusive vacation in the UK, Butlin was one of the first resorts to promote the idea on a huge scale. It became a sensation.

The Birth of All-Inclusive Resorts in the Caribbean

The king of the holiday camps in Britain, Billy Butlin, arrived at West End, Grand Bahama, in the latter part of 1947 aboard the Grumman Goose flying boat to create an extravagant resort. The plan included a runway of 5,000 feet, a 424-room hotel, and the biggest pools in the Bahamas, along with various restaurants, shops, and other services.

The resort at West End was an exception to the camps for a vacation that Butlin had set up in the UK. It was a more luxurious, all-inclusive resort aimed at an elite clientele. The resort, Butlin’s Vacation Village, was located on a vast area of land. It has many types of accommodations and restaurants, including leisure, sports, dining options, and entertainment choices.

However, initial plans were a failure, and Butlin’s venture was almost bankrupt by 1950. The Vacation Village closed after only a few months of operation.

But the resort was a significant part of Butlin’s history and was instrumental in establishing his status as an innovator in the tourism industry.

Majorca’s Beachfront All-Inclusive Resort

A Belgian Visionary’s Communal Village

Club Med was the first Club Med to open in 1950 because of Gerard Blitz, a Belgian entrepreneur. Blitz was an idealist who wanted to provide individuals with the opportunity to step away from their everyday routines to relax and have fun.

The resort was founded on the concept of providing all-inclusive vacations in a shared village-style environment. The first villages were rough in the corners. The concept of Club Med was to offer an affordable and easy holiday experience that was distinct from the traditional hotel. With the focus being on activities that were social, athletic, and community-based. The Club Med was a collection of straw huts without lighting along the beachfront with shared wash facilities.

From Beachfront Huts to All-Inclusive Resorts

The Majorca resort was a huge success and was instrumental in establishing Club Med as a leader in the all-inclusive vacation industry. However, as time has passed, the resorts have evolved as well. Club Med has become known as a provider of all-inclusive holiday packages for couples, families, and groups.

From Run-Down to World-Class

The Birth of Sandals Resorts

Sandals was founded in 1981. That year, Gordon Stewart bought an old hotel in Montego Bay. He turned it into the mainstay of the most well-known, all-inclusive resort name. It was more expensive and had better facilities than Billy Butlin’s Caribbean Village. It had dining, entertainment, and a range of other things. The business model they developed pioneered the idea of a stay that included meals, accommodations, entertainment, and activities all at one cost.

A dynamic manager, Stewart infused their resorts with Jamaica’s warm, friendly personality and encouraged staff to engage with guests realistically. By doing this, they forged the “we can do it better” attitude that is now the basis for Sandals and its Beaches Resorts brands.
